So, I turn 21 on monday. Now as some of you may know, late last semester I lost one of my poi. As it happens, I have a package from my parents that looks suspiciously like a new set of poi (okay, they had it sent straight o me so there's a big sticker that says "Home of Poi" on the outside). I'm being kinda sorta stubborn, and so I haven't openned it yet. But on monday, I do believe I shall.

Now, as you may or may not know, brand new poi look kinda funny looking, on account of the Kevlar wicking being naturally pale yellow. Therefore I propose celebrating my birthday with <16pt>FIRE<12pt>. I'll spin some, anyone who wants to can spin with my new poi, anyone who's got their own poi is welcome to use the can of fuel I've now got in my trunk. Certainly anyone is welcome to come. I'm thinking 9:30pm in the B-C courtyard. Will need someone to provide a metal can/bowl and a lighter. May need to be called on account of pouring rain or on account of "Ryan should have thought twice before doing poi right after fencing" but hopefully not.

Sound good?

So, if you want a short basic swing lesson before black tie, come to Turtletopia tomorrow at 4:30pm. For your own sakes, maybe try to come pretty close to then or even early; I don't much care, but those of you who are gonig to dinner will probably appreciate having more time to finish getting ready.

The whole thing will probably run about half an hour. I'll bring the music. If no one's in Turtletopia, go look around the Atrium, because we'll be there.

See y'all there :)

So, while I'm not going to black tie this year, it occured to me that those who are going might enjoy knowing a bit of how to dance before they go. So I'm thinking that if people are interested (and I've gotten a bit of interest already) I'd do a short little basic swing lesson Friday afternoon.

I'm thinking like 4:00pm, to give people enough time to go get dressed and spruced and out to dinner. Maybe meet in Turtletopia and then move out to the Atrium for space.

So, any takers? And for that matter, any preferences or requests as far as time/place?

EDIT: I've received one request for 4:30, and I'll go for that if no one else has preferences. Given that I've got all night to get work done, I'm pretty flexible on time.

.....

So, I just cleaned up my room a bit so there's room to walk around some when Dani gets here. Hence the first cleaning. Today was also the math exam o' doom, which didn't go as badly as I feared but didn't go too well anyhow. It was going well; we had to pick 4 out of five definitions to write and 5 out of 7 proofs, with the extras being extra credit if we had time. Plowed through the definitions easily, and got through four proofs with half an hour left to go...and then couldn't figure out another one. But at least I'm probably (hopefully) looking at something better than the C- or worse that I've been getting on the problem sets.

Between one thing and another, I shelled out almost $350 (!) in the last 24 hours. Paying miscellanious expenses, paying for a passport, and dropping checks in the mail for my speeding ticket. Ooof.

So now I should work on my thesis, or failing that on the math econ problems that I'm supposed to discuss tomorrow, but I can't make myself focus because in under an hour I leave for PDX and in about two hours Dani's plane gets in :):):):):):):)

So I'm happy :).

So, I just got an e-mail from the Graduate Advisor at USC saying (essentially unoffically) that I've been admitted to the econ program there. Which has put me in a very strange mood. Because immediately after applying there I learned things about it that made me think twice about going, and I think in the end Dani didn't actually apply there. And moreover, it's the middle of bloody february; I'm not supposed to be hearing back from grad schools until the middle of march.

Summary: ....yay?

It's monday, the last monday of classes for this semester. My brain has mildly checked out already. Time to run the numbers...Collapse )

In other news, my dance class is doing our final performance on wednesday, which is open to the public. It's at 12:15 in the Kresge. If you come you'll get to see me doing a very different kind of dance then I normally do. Leah and Hiroko are also in the class, for those of you who know them.

And in still other news: :) That's all.

Thanksgiving break was/has been a lot of fun. Spent time with family, walked to feed the hungry, picked out a Christmas tree for my family's front porch and a simply ridiculous tree for Dani's family's living room, ate way too much good food (one and a half thanksgiving dinners plus chicken piccata, steak fajita sandwiches and meatball subs), and of course spent lots of quality time with Dani. Only down sides were that I didn't get much thanksgiving leftovers (partly on account of Brenton having a get-together during lunchtime and not serving food...), and it went back way too fast.

Now I'm putting off getting some reading done this afternoon. I fly back to Oregon tonight at 9:30 in the evening, and get back to Salem around midnight, then sleep, then hit the ground running for the insanity that will be the last three weeks of school. Just have to do a prospectus for my thesis (with 6 solid pages of economic theory), 2700 word essay setting out my idea for an environmental ethic, a big meaty econometric case study, an inevitable pile of statistics homework, grad school essays, and two big finals. The usual, in other words. Egads.

Went to folk dance on friday, which was a blast. I don't get to really dance like that often enough at school. Swing club is the closest thing to it, and that's not nearly as fun without a partner. But I was way more whipped afterwards than I should have been. Sure, there were a lot of fast and crazy dances in a row, including a crazy-fast swing (and I'm the only one crazy enough to do lindy hop to Zoot Suit Riot...), but still. So that settles my indecision on my half or quarter credit class for next semester. Convocation is out, fencing is in. I need to be getting more exercise, and since I flat out refuse to do exercise for its own sake, and the dance options are so palid, fencing it is.

There were a couple other things, but I'll throw in a couple random memes instead.

So, I have to go to a dance concert and review it for my dance class, and so I'm driving down to Eugene to see a concert at U of O this saturday. Anyone want to come with me? It's only 5 bucks, an it's at 8pm, so I'd probably be leaving about 6:30. Let me know... :)

Today was frustrating. A lot of work to do, but for one reason or another I couldn't do any of it this afternoon. Combination of not knowing how to do things and not having responsed back from professors. Feeling a bit better now that I finished my takehome exam for probability and statistics.

In other news, I'm getting increasingly annoyed at people in my living room making noise past freakin' 1am in the morning. I mean really, I'd get better consideration in the dorms. Silly paper-thin walls.

And I decided to do the random survey from Brenton via Jessie, just 'cause.

Why not a meme?Collapse )
